There are two categories of head injuries, external or internal. External injuries (like cuts to the scalp) are usually less serious, even though there may be substantial bleeding since the scalp is full of blood vessels. Internal head injuries (which may include skull fracture, tearing of blood vessels, or brain damage) are very serious and can be life-threatening. Symptoms include unconsciousness, neck pain or stiffness, abnormal breathing, impaired speech, impaired vision, dizziness, bleeding from nose, ear or mouth, unequal pupil size, and weakness or paralysis.
